Local Information : Walks in Devon

Devon is a delight for walkers of all levels offering stunning country and coastal walks to suit all. The South West Coast Path runs from Minehead in Somerset to South Haven Point near Poole Dorset and includes all 95 miles of the Dorset and East Devon World Heritage Site known as the Jurassic Coast , where fossils can be found dating back to prehistoric times.

As well as the views, the path also boasts some fantastic flowers and wildlife - May is a good time to see the coastal flowers at their best. Seabirds are also highly visible, as well as other bird life.

Here are a few recommended local walks:

Beer to Branscombe

Starting at Beer Head car park, this 3 mile (5km) walk is easy apart from one long flight of steps. Fantastic views on offer on this walk between these two lovely villages. You can choose to get the bus back from Branscombe or extend it by walking back to Beer.

Budleigh Salterton to Otterton

This flat walk is popular for all, including wheelchair users and pushchairs. Start at Budleigh Salterton car park and follow the River Otter to the pretty village of Otterton. You can reward yourselves with a cream tea at Otteron Mill or an ice cream on your return to the beach.

Seaton to Lyme Regis Undercliffs

This challenging walk starts at Seaton seafront, through the Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs National Nature Reserve, one of the highlights of the Jurassic Coast. This walk is on uneven terrain and can be muddy and slippery underfoot following wet weather. Note, once you have entered the Undercliff there are no paths leading inland (or seaward) and it generally takes about 3½ - 4 hours to reach Lyme Regis.

Sidmouth: Coast & River

A spectacular 11 mile (18 km) circular walk from Muttersmoor car park along the red cliffs of east Devon to the estuary, up the River Otter before climbing out of the valley up onto Mutters Moor.
