Burning Tar Barrels at Ottery St Mary, 5th of November starts 4.30pm. This is a free event that has been taking place in Ottery St Mary since the 17th Century. It was orginally done to rid the village of evil spirits. Brave men, women and children race through the streets with burning tar barrels on their backs until either the heat gets to much or the barrels break apart with the flames. This is a crazy event and a must see if you are in the area! We normally get there early enough to get a drink in one of the local pubs and then grab a good vantage point as it does get rammed with spectators. More information can be found here.
